Our customer is a leading Russian ticketing system provider. It has 1000+ ticketing offices in 20 biggest Russian cities, such as Moscow, St. Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Yekaterinburg, Kazan, Chelyabinsk, Perm, Ufa, Rostov-on-Don and Sochi.

The business area is providing tickets sale and access control for theater, cinema, concert, sport, musical and other entertainment events. Customer’s software is a client-server solution that manages all processes in ticketing life cycle. The company sells tickets in its own ticketing offices and points of sale, through the website and through partners’ networks.


The customer’s software is used as a standalone ticketing system at the Ice Palace in St. Petersburg. The stadium uses portable barcode readers to validate tickets. The software needed adjustments and improvements in order to integrate with the hardware.

  • Sometimes the scanner could not recognize the ticket barcode, so manual input was required. The user interface was not optimized for this scenario, so it took quite some time to input the barcode.
  • A controller could mistakenly switch to different scanner modes. This caused unforeseen delays during ticket validation.
  • A controller could mistakenly scan a ticket twice. In this case, the controller did not understand whether the ticket was valid or it was a possible fake ticket.
  • Several reports were very slow.
  • New report types for financial management were needed.


It was decided to renew the user interface — create a new one and redesign touch screen layout, so most operations are available with hardware buttons instead of screen clicking.

The new solution allows:

  • minimising the number of actions during manual barcode input
  • avoiding mistakes when switching scanner modes

If the ticket was already scanned, the scanner software shows when and where (on which scanner device) the first entrance occurred. This allows distinguishing rescan operation from identifying potentially fake ticket.

We implemented multithreading/parallel approach for several time-consuming reports, so they perform OK now. We also developed a number of new reports for financial management.

Results / Benefits

Improvements of the access control software allow reducing delays during ticket validation and identify potentially fake tickets.

The most time-consuming reports now take minutes in comparison with hours before the optimisation. The new financial reports present data needed for financial managers.
